AI Policy Update
28 August 2025
This week's AI policy update.
First up, new thinking: regulating Gen AI.
With new chapters exploring the risks, regulation, and applications of Generative AI, the Oxford Handbook of the Foundations and Regulation of Generative AI is nearly complete.
New regulation - and policy-focused chapters include "Regulating Multifunctionality" by Cary Coglianese, a "Regulatory Approach for Frontier AI" by Jonas Schuett et al., and "Gen AI Regulation in the US and Canada" by Ignacio Cofone, among other articles.
One of the editors of the handbook, Philipp Hacker, details more in his informative post here: https://lnkd.in/ebbCKPGX?.
Next, new events: how AI can improve the state
10 Downing Street's data science team is hosting a public hackathon at Imperial College London to demonstrate how AI can enhance the state and improve the relationship between the government and the public.
Billed as a chance to shape how AI is used for the public good, the event promises to be an opportunity to build a community to drive change.

Finally, new guidance: the global governance of AI
This week, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that establishes two new AI governance mechanisms.
First is the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. The panel's role is to issue evidence-based scientific assessments that synthesise and analyse existing research related to the opportunities, risks and impacts of AI.
Second is the Global Dialogue on AI Governance. The global dialogue, which includes governments and other relevant stakeholders, will discuss international cooperation, share best practices, and facilitate open and inclusive conversations on AI governance to enable AI to contribute to the implementation of the SDGs.
Natasha Crampton, Chief Responsible AI Officer at Microsoft, details the genesis of these developments in her informative post here: https://lnkd.in/eSfnS8U9.
