AI Policy Update:

This week's AI policy update.
First, the US AI Action Plan and the space race.
Returning to the White House AI Action Plan this week, the excellent Verity Harding of Formation Advisory reminds us that comparing AI to the space race "misinterprets the history of the Space Race" and "the best pathway to realising the promise of AI."
Verity suggests that progress will not emerge from competition but from "pragmatic multilateralism and a cooperative strategy that reflects the very values we hope to embed in AI itself."

Second, new research: what the public wants from AI regulation
A fascinating new survey by Claes de Vreese, Natali Helberger, Sophie Morosely, Nicolas Mattis, and Laurens Naudts, published by Tech Policy Press, asks what the public expects from governments with AI policy.
The research shows that citizens in six countries believe that AI developers have a significant responsibility to ensure that AI is safe and respects fundamental rights. Accordingly, citizens want regulation to prioritise economic well-being and the protection of such rights.

Last, new events: Oxford Gen AI Summit
The Oxford Generative AI Summit is a two-day event in October that brings together 200+ leaders from enterprise, startups, government, academia, and the media to deep dive into the use cases, societal implications, and future of generative AI and society.
One of this year's themes includes how generative AI is shaping our society and economy, and how leaders can navigate these transformations and prepare for a future shaped by AI.
Speakers include Matt Clifford CBE, the Prime Minister's former Adviser on AI Opportunities, Julie Brill, Corporate Vice President, Global Technology and Regulatory Policy at Microsoft, and Lord Tim Clement-Jones, Lib Dem Lords spokesman on Science, Innovation and Technology, among others.
It promises to be a great event.
